The origin
of Blackjack is somewhat unclear. Gambling was legal out West from the 1850's to 1910, at which time
Nevada made it a felony to operate a gambling game. As some of you may recall, 1978 was the year casino
gambling was legalized in Atlantic City, New Jersey. As of 1989, only two states
had legalized casino gambling. Roughly 70 Native American
Indian reservations operate or are building casinos as well. The object of
the game is to obtain a hand of cards totaling up to 21 or as close to 21 as
possible without going over. Each card
in Blackjack has a certain value. Card between 2 and 10 simply have their face
value regardless of suit. If the
dealer's hand is between 17 and 21, he or she may not draw any additional card.
If the dealer's hand is 16 or below, cards must be drawn until the dealer's hand
has a value of 17 or higher. If
your first two cards total 21, you have Blackjack and win 3:2 odds on your bet
automatically unless the dealer draws Blackjack as well causing a tie or a
"Push." In the case of a tie, no money is won or lost. You win if your
hand is closer to 21 than the dealer's hand. Surrender - this decision is quite rare and not offered is most casinos. After you see your starting hand and the dealers up card and you don't think you can win, you have to give your cards back to the dealer
immediately. If you surrender you will only lose half of your original bet.
