The game became known as Blackjack because if a player held a Jack of Spades and an Ace of Spades as the 1st two cards, the player was paid out extra. With a Jack being a vital card and Spades being black, the game was called Blackjack. In 1931, Nevada re-legalized casino gambling where BlackJack became one of the primary games of chance offered to gamblers. As of 1989, only two states had legalized casino gambling. The blackjack table seats 1 to 7 players and each player has a betting square printed in front of them on the felt and each table will have a minimum bet which you should check before sitting down. Once all bets are down the dealer will deal two cards, one at a time, from left to right until both the players and dealer has two cards. In a shoe game the cards are dealt face up and you shouldn't touch the cards. Once all bets are placed, each player and the dealer will receive two cards. Starting to the dealer's left side, the cards are dealt in a round one at a time to each player ending with the dealer receiving his second card face down. Once all players have decided to "Stand," the dealer reveals the face down card known as the "Hole" card. Split - if your starting hand contains two cards of the same type (i.e. two 9's) you can split them up into two new hands. Surrender - this decision is quite rare and not offered is most casinos. After you see your starting hand and the dealers up card and you don't think you can win, you have to give your cards back to the dealer immediately. If you surrender you will only lose half of your original bet.
