Chinese people began to shuffle paper money into various
combinations and in China today the term for playing cards means paper tickets.
The 52 card deck as we know it was originally called the French Pack. As of 1989, only two states
had legalized casino gambling. Once all bets are down the dealer will deal two cards, one
at a time, from left to right until both the players and dealer has two cards.
In a shoe game the cards are dealt face up and you shouldn't touch the cards. In
face down card games you can pick up the cards but you must not use more than
one hand to pick them up. If your hand beats the dealer's hand, you
win. Once all bets are
placed, each player and the dealer will receive two cards. Starting to the
dealer's left side, the cards are dealt in a round one at a time to each player
ending with the dealer receiving his second card face down. An
Ace can count as 1 or 11 depending on what is most beneficial to your hand.
Player's add the value of their cards and either decide to "Stick" or
"Stand" with their current cards or receive another card, called a
"Hit" or "Draw," hopefully raising their total closer to 21
without going over. Blackjack can be won in a few different ways. You win if your
hand is closer to 21 than the dealer's hand. Split - if your starting hand contains two cards of the same type (i.e. two 9's) you can split them up into two new
hands. Surrender - this decision is quite rare and not offered is most casinos. After you see your starting hand and the dealers up card and you don't think you can win, you have to give your cards back to the dealer
immediately. If you surrender you will only lose half of your original bet.
